About HIRAGANA:

Hiragana is one of three character sets used in the Japanese language.

Each Hiragana letter represents particular syllable. Letter itself has no meaning.

Hiragana is used widely to form a sentence.

Hiragana was developed in the 8-10th century by simplifying the form of particular Kanji symbols

About KATAKANA:

Katakana is one of three characters used in the Japanese language.

Katakana is a phonetic alphabet - each letter represents the sound of a syllable (like English ABC). Letter itself has no meaning.

Katakana and Hiragana represent exactly the same set of sounds.

Katakana is used mostly for foreign loan words.

Katakana was developed in the 8th century by simplifying the form of Kanji symbols.

Many of Katakana letters look exactly the same as a part of its original Kanji.

About KANJI:

Kanji (Chinese character) is one of three character sets used in the Japanese language.

Kanji is an ideographic character - each letter symbolizes its meaning.

Kanji is used widely to form a sentence

Kanji symbols were imported from China.

Pronunciation and usage of Kanji have been modified to fit the Japanese language.

Additionally, some Kanji letters were developed in Japan

About ROMAJI:

Romaji was developed to describe the sound of Japanese in Roman alphabet.

Romaji is mainly used for the convenience of foreigners who are not familiar with Japanese characters.

For example, names of train stations are shown in both Romaji (Roman alphabet) and Japanese characters.
